The Maker and His Dolls

The Maker and His Dolls

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. Then God made a He and a She to live together in the world that was created for them. He was made from the dust, and She was then made from the bones of Him. The design was for Her to be His perfect, complimentary helpmate in every way, and in return He would love, honor and protect Her always.

But in this world, He and She have free will and are both vulnerable to being led astray. It’s entirely possible that they may succumb to fear, temptation and doubt that will drive them worlds apart. They may never find themselves together if they cannot overcome these obstacles. The question is… if He and She aren’t together yet, who is helping them along their journey toward wholeness and to one another?

HE:

In the night, when He is alone, He wakes up and sits in silence.

He listens for God’s voice, but isn’t sure what’s really there.

It is this time every night that the demons in His brain begin stirring up madness and doubt, stealing His peace and rest.

He rubs His hands over His face… He knows why He is awake and what He must do.

From under His bed, He pulls out a tool box.

The latch is worn deep with His finger prints and sorrow.

One by one, He removes the tools and gently sets them out, like a doctor preparing for surgery.

He begins the process that He knows so well, of opening up His skull and taking out His brain for examination and repairing.

Each section of His mind is separated like puzzle pieces, and He stares down in confusion and wonder asking Himself what He’s missed— what He has not tried yet.

Over and over and over again, just like every night, He takes it apart and puts it back together… and takes it apart again, and puts it back together in a different way— then takes it apart again.

He is driven by a fever to never stop trying to figure out why He can’t seem to fit it back together in a way that feels right to Him.

The repetition is a prison of agony, but He never stops trying to find the solution.

When the sun comes up, He must start the day.

He puts His mind back into His skull, closes up the incisions that have been made thousands of times, and tucks the tool box back under His bed until the sun goes down again.

The wounds of His efforts are cleverly hidden with armor and strength, so only He and God know what He goes through in the night.

SHE:

In the night, when She is alone, She wakes up and sits in silence.

She listens for God’s voice, but isn’t sure what’s really there.

It is this time every night that the demons in Her heart begin stirring up fear and loneliness, stealing Her peace and rest.

She rubs Her hands over Her face… She knows why She is awake and what She must do.

From under Her bed, She pulls out a tool box.

The latch is worn deep with Her tears and anger.

One by one, She removes the tools and gently sets them out, like a doctor preparing for surgery.

She begins the process that She knows so well, of opening up Her chest and taking out Her heart for examination and repairing.

Each broken piece of Her heart is carefully removed from her ribs, lungs and spine, and is separated like puzzle pieces.

She stares down in confusion and pain, asking Herself what She’s missed— what She has not tried yet.

Over and over and over again, just like every night, She mixes up various types of bonding materials in an attempt to finally keep Her heart together long enough to spark a beat— a rhythm that will last.

She is driven by a sickness to never stop trying to figure out how to keep it together once and for all.

The repetition is a prison of agony, but She never stops trying to find the solution.

When the sun comes up, She must start the day.

She puts Her heart back into Her chest, closes up the incisions that have been made thousands of times, and tucks the tool box back under Her bed until the sun goes down again.

The wounds of Her efforts are cleverly hidden with armor and grace, so only She and God know what She goes through in the night.

THE MAKER:

It is in this separation, that God steps in.

Man: Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. -Genesis 2:7

Woman: Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” -Genesis 2:18

What only God can do: But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. -Isaiah 64:8

Through this scripture, an amazing realization awakens within us: we don’t have the power to fix ourselves or each other, but God does. This is truly wonderful to accept because it frees us from the burden and agony of endlessly trying to repair ourselves and the ones we love. Some things are just too big for us, and the “solution” we keep looking for in ourselves is actually the power of God to work in us and through us. Find peace and rest in allowing God to mend all things that need to be healed! Illnesses of the mind and heart are not too big for God— He raised the dead and parted the sea, so He can help us with any issue that we face.

There is a lie that the enemy uses to separate us all from love— from God and from loving one another— and that lie is using fear, doubt and pain to make us forget the power that only God has to fix broken things. As His children, when our minds feel sick and our hearts feel broken, we should turn to Him and ask Him to heal us…

And we do ask Him:

…Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” -Romans 9:20

The answer:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. -Ephesians 2:10

Here is how:

But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” -Matthew 19:26

Through this scripture, we learn that we have all been asking our maker “why,” since the beginning of time… so, He gives us the answer multiple times throughout the Bible: good works and love. He made us to be good, to spread good, and to live good lives filled with love. However, we are not perfect, and every step of the way will require God to do the heavy lifting for us that only He can do. Man cannot achieve this goodness alone, but with God intimately involved in every detail of our lives, we will succeed and do amazing things with His infinite power working through us.

We may feel like “broken dolls” at times, crying out to our maker when we feel helpless, but again, we need to work on releasing ourselves from carrying a weight that was never meant for us to bear. Jesus carried the cross so that we would not have to. Allow that concept to fill up your mind and heart entirely! We struggle so much at times because we see ourselves as strong and powerful, but remember, we are God’s children and He made us to live in joy and in love, not to endure suffering.

♡✞♡ FINALLY, HE AND SHE MEET:

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. -Genesis 2:25

Simply put, Adam and Eve knew they were naked only because they sinned, but even in sin… even in total nakedness of flaws, they stood before one another and were not ashamed. God allowed them to fully see the other. She could see where his mind had failed him and caused him to sin, and he could see where her heart was tricked and influenced by the enemy. Still, even in this bad behavior, they were not ashamed of themselves or of each other because they knew that God had made them to be together, and that only He could fix what they had broken. If God is working between he and she, both will find the courage to show themselves to the other, flaws and all, and shame will be cast out, leaving only love!

As we reflect on these scriptures and in God’s power to heal and repair us, let’s say this prayer together:

Dear Lord,

Help me to end the repetition of trying to fix myself and others over and over again.

With your power, help me to lock up my tool box forever and throw it in the fire along with all of my fear, doubt and pain.

Remind me that you did not make me to be whole on my own, but with many beautiful spaces that only your love can fill up, and places reserved only for my soulmate.

God, I’m ready to find peace in knowing that you can heal the wounds of my mind and heart, and tonight, allow me to close my eyes in your grace and get some rest!

I know you’re working on me at all times, even while I sleep.

I trust in your plans to restore me and make me new, so that I can live the good life you want for me!

Amen.
